On the 5th matchday of the Champions League group phase, FC Bayern Munich made it to the round of sixteen perfectly. Niko Kovac’s team won 5-1 (3-0) against Benfica Lisbon, saving their coach’s job for the time being.
Kovac changed his starting eleven to two positions compared to 3:3 against Düsseldorf. For Martinez and Sanches, Rafinha and Seals began. It was Robben who made the difference after a sluggish start for FC Bayern with two strong individual actions.
In the 13th minute, he moved from the right to the middle, played four opponents and shot into the top left corner. In the 30th, he locked a counter with a shot in the right angle. After a Kimmich flank, Lewandowski headed the 3-0 lead (36th). FC Bayern did not shine, but proved efficiency. Benfica did not give offensive impulses.
Only 38 seconds after the change of side, this changed abruptly: Gedson Fernandes, who was only substituted at half time, shortened the time to 1:3 after a mistake by Boateng – but this time FC Bayern did not falter.
In the 51st, Lewandowski once again managed a 4-1 header after Kimmich-Flanke and gave his team a relaxed second half. FC Bayern let the ball run and Ribery provided in the 76th for the final point. He was then replaced by Kovac – and hugged him.
Goals: 1:0 Seals (13.), 2:0 Seals (30.), 3:0 Lewandowski (36.), 3:1 Gedson Fernandes 3:1 (46.), 4:1 Lewandowski (51.), 5:1 Ribery (76.)
With his two great goals, he put FC Bayern on course early on. Strong also his cross on Müller in the 36th in the 72nd Robben was replaced under standing ovations for Sanches.
The right-wing midfielder did not set any accents, did not finish a single time and won just under 33 per cent of his duels. Pizzi was changed at half time.
