Bundesliga: BVB: Weigl before change in winter?

Julian Weigl could leave Bundesliga leader Borussia Dortmund during the winter break. According to a report in the Bild newspaper, AS Rome would like to borrow the 23-year-old midfielder for a year and a half.

Weigl’s contract with BVB runs until June 2021, but under coach Lucien Favre he doesn’t play a big role. Prior to the Schalke 04 quarter derby on Saturday (from 15.30 in the LIVETICKER), Weigl played in the Bundesliga in three out of 13 matches.

In the top match against FC Bayern, Weigl was surprisingly in the starting eleven, but could not convince and was already replaced at the break.

There had already been rumours in the summer about the 23-year-old’s departure after Thomas Tuchel had taken over the coaching position at Paris Saint-Germain. Tuchel has been regarded as Weigl’s sponsor since his time with the BVB: Under him, Weigl became a regular player in Dortmund immediately after his move from 1860 Munich and played 94 compulsory games for the BVB from 2015 to 2017.

According to Weigl, however, a change in summer was out of the question for him: “

“There was no willingness on my part to leave the BVB this summer,” he said in an interview with Sport Bild. “It was already clear to me that these rumours would arise the moment Thomas Tuchel was determined to be the new Paris coach.
